Ellen Schowalter
Ellen Schowalter, a resident of the Outaouais for more than 30 years, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, USA, and has studied Art and Art History at The Ottawa School of Art, Carleton University, Algonquin College and The Art Institute of Chicago.
Recently she has exhibited at Sante Gallery, Languages of Life Invitational Show, Art in the Garden, Art in the Park and notably ”The Eye of Experience,” juried by the Art Gallery of Ontario. Feb-March 2004 at Centrepointe Gallery, juried by the City of Ottawa Visual Arts program she had a solo show, “Fish Signs” along with numerous other shows in the community. Solo show at the Casino, Lac Leamy, 2005. October 2004 exhibition entitled “Similar Realities” along with Geraldine Classen and Paula Mitas Zoubek at UNAM, in Gatineau, QC. August 2009 she participated in a group show-”Flora” at the Stone School Gallery, Portage du Fort, Q.C. Solo show spring 2010 Sante Restaurant.
She is a long-time contributor to the organizing of community art events including Art in the Park, Art in the Garden, and Art in the Hall, as well as curating community art events. She participated in Bhat Boy’s “Bronson People project” a traffic calming initiative sponsored by the RMOC.
Painting in oil and acrylic, she attempts to capture and convey the energy of nature. She is frequent reviewer of the visual arts for the Glebe Report Newspaper for the past 25 years, and has illustrated a children’s book, The Magic Pot. Most recently, she has become involved in doing Art Therapy with people with Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias and has taught art classes for seniors.
